Solar Battery Rebate

Australia is set to embark on a transformative journey toward energy independence and sustainability with the launch of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program on July 1st, 2025. This initiative is aimed at making solar battery storage more accessible and affordable for households, small businesses, and community facilities across the nation and the government battery rebate is uncapped which means no limit on the number of subsidies available. The rebate is applied at the time of purchase through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which has now been expanded to include battery systems.

The subsidy won’t be means tested and the rebate can also be combined with existing state schemes.

The initiative looks to provide financial relief on electricity bills whilst also contributing to reducing reliance on the electricity grids and supporting Australia’s commitment to achieving 82% renewable electricity by 2030.

Key features of the program:

  • It is available to all Australian households, small businesses, and community facilities.
  • Rebates apply to systems with a usable battery capacity of at least 5 kWh and up to a maximum of 50 kWh per installation.
  • Encourages the integration of battery systems with Virtual Power Plants, allowing for optimised energy distribution and grid support.
  • The program is set to commence on July 1st 2025, however solar batteries installed from now until commencement are also eligible if they are not switched on until July 1st.

Which batteries are eligible:

  • Batteries need to be approved by the Clean Energy Council and installers must have the relevant accreditation from SAA (Solar Accreditation Australia).
  • The minimum amount of usable capacity covered under the scheme is 5 kWh.
  • The maximum amount of usable capacity is 50 kWh, but you can install systems up to 100 kWh and still receive the rebate for a 50 kWh system.
  • Solar batteries must be capable of connecting to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), however there’s no requirement to actually join a VPP program.

Looking Ahead

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a step towards Australians being able to take control of their energy consumption and costs. By making battery storage more accessible, this program not only offers financial benefits but also contributes to a sustainable and resilient energy future for the nation.
